Squirrel salvation

Tales from an animal rehabber

November 1, 2024 | Story and photo by Lauren Brensel
Becky Goodman looks at her squirrel Penny. Penny is being unable to be released in the wild due to being rescued with severe injuries years ago.

Becky Goodman, 49, is a squirrel savior.

As an animal rehabber based in Gainesville, she rescues injured squirrels, treats and cares for them in designated enclosures and releases them into the wilderness again.

It’s a physically and emotionally taxing job. But the perseverance of squirrels like her pet Penny, who sustained such intense injuries that she can’t live in the wild, make the cuts and bruises and regular hospital visits worthwhile.
